Flowers Don't Grow Here

Think you know Europe? Think again. Preconceptions about the expanding European Union and a modern, developed "New Europe" are quickly shattered when they come up against the realities of child homelessness in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. Ukraine is Europe's second largest country, but it has struggled to achieve economic and social stability since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The rapid transition from communism to capitalism has resulted in a state of economic fragility and fatigue, producing widespread alcoholism, crime and, in many cases, the disintegration of families. By one estimate there are 1 million homeless children living on Ukraine's streets. Here is a street level view of what life is like for Kiev's street kids.
