Elegy

Amanda is on the pont d’Arcole footbridge that crosses the Seine. When we first see her, a melody is heard on the clarinet that establishes her theme. We follow her as she meets her pimp and dealer. Later, she enters a secret entrance to the catacombs where she encounters an elderly couple and a drunkard hoping for sexual favours. She also performs a bizarre pas de deux in which a Moroccan dealer tantalizes her but retreats in indifference, leaving Amanda to her fate. This dance-drama ballet about the final day in the life of a prostitute is set to the music of Delius’s Paris symphony. Its entire structure: location, characters, movement and dance, develops from the music score.
