Du shtetl à Broadway
Du shtetl à Broadway follows the resonant roads from the shtetls of Russia to the lights of Broadway, retracing a still little-known odyssey, that of the migration of Eastern European Jews to America—Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and many others. Between 1880 and 1924, some 2,500,000 Jews arrived on American shores. As America gave form to a new Jewish identity, Jewish-American popular songs and music forged in turn the cultural identity of modern America. Through the styles of these composers, from Yiddish theater to musical comedy, from klezmer to ragtime, this film tells the marvelous story of the metamorphosis of a melody.
