After the Second World War, West Berlin is cut off from the rest of the world by the Soviets. To thwart the blockade, the Americans devise an airlift. Louise, a young German, has lost all contact with her husband, Alex. She begins to work for Turner, an American in charge of the airlift. She falls in love with him and begins to dream of a new life. But Alex returns, having spent years as a prisoner of the Soviets. A doctor by training, Alex finds himself in another combat threatening the city: tuberculosis. Turner must bring in the necessary drugs in time to check the epidemic.
