Hans-Werne Müller is a border guard at the Polish-Ukrainian frontier; Lippa is a high-spirited Ukrainian woman who helps smuggle people across the border. They are not on the same side of the new Eastern European border. While he is supposed to be training his colleagues into new Western methods, he makes the mistake of letting Lippa escape when she is arrested. To make up for his error, he decides to pursue her into the forest region between the two countries. Wounded, he is taken in by Lippa. He learns about life on the other side of the border, a region he is unfamiliar with and where everyone sees him as an enemy. But for Lippa, this is all part of a bargain: he in turn must help her.
