Boca Juniors / River Plate
The Observer drew up a list of the top 50 sporting things you must do before you die. At the top of the list was Boca Juniors vs. River Plate in Buenos Aires. Boca/River is much more than a match: it’s a century of love and hate, and Argentina, from the depths of Patagonia to the Andean cordillera, which thrills to the conjunction of these two teams for 90 minutes. The last match took place on November 7, 2005: for weeks, no one spoke about anything else. River welcomed Boca to its home turf in a packed Monumental Stadium. The police were on edge and there was a risk that things could heat up even more than usual.
