A provincial village in the Eifel, where everybody knows each other… They all have their own ways to ensure that this does not change: one extends his knowledge by using binoculars; the other relies on the local gossip; or you just keep in touch by writing anonymous letters. But everybody is shocked when they hear about the death of the young policemen, Fischer, who has a fatal accident on a deserted country road. The official police report says the accident was caused by a deer. But 7-year-old Arnie has seen what really happened, but nobody wants to hear it. Only Hannah, kleptomaniac wife of the local police commissioner, and hated by the locals, takes Arnie's words seriously. Then Arnie suddenly disappears…
