At a time when the unemployment rate in Portugal has reached the highest level since 1998, the following report shows an example of a fight for work. On the night of 29th November 2004, the German owners of a textile factory in Arcos de Valdevez were surprised by a female staff member when they were trying to remove machines and fabrics from the premises. The attempt to move the factory to the Czech Republic happened without any warning only a few hours after a meeting with the manager to plan for the 2005 year. The owners were stopped by workers, who sued them for attempted robbery and decided to learn from the experience. For the past three months, they have been running the factory.
