The Rock
Seven days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1942, 36 US soldiers arrived to Baltra Island, in the Galapagos, to build the largest air-sea base of the Southern Pacific. The goal was to defend the Panama Canal from the threat of the Japanese Imperial Navy. Over 10 000 US military passed by The Rock to get used to the weather conditions in offshore fronts. In practice, none of them participated in any battle. At the end of the war, a large majority of the base's facilities was dumped into the sea. Sixty years later, a group of former US militaries assigned to Baltra came back to the island. This is the story of what happened during the North American occupation of Galapagos, vestiges, submarine images, testimonies of what life was during World War II in this Natural World Heritage.
