The Real Bangkok Hilton

Thailand’s Bang Kwang Prison dubbed "The Bangkok Hilton" in feature films and novels, is the most notorious prison in the world. As the Thai authorities try to crack down on drug trafficking, "This World" gains the first ever access to the prison in which everyone is serving a sentence of more than 30 years, usually for drugs offences. The human stories inside include a young British prisoner struggling to stay sane, a transvestite who smuggled drugs to pay for a breast augmentation, dying AIDS patients shackled to their beds, a death row prisoner pleading for a second chance, and an executioner proud to demonstrate how he carries out his job. Khun Nattee, the director of prisons, wants this to be a warning to tourists – “Thai prisons are tough - you don’t want to be in Bang Kwang”.
