Taliban Country

While Iraq dominated headlines during 2004, Afghanistan was largely forgotten by the world media. Baranowska was the first independent reporter this year to travel into South Central Afghanistan, both behind US military and Taliban lines. Initially embedded with US Marines in Central Afghanistan, she followed them on the cordon and knock operations as well as the US Army’s "hearts and minds campaign", discovering in the process that the Marine's ally, Governor Jan Mohammed, and his local militia were terrorising the population. Returning to the area independently she also exposed that US Marines were brutalising the local community into compliance. As a result of this program, the US Army and Marine Corps both announced separate inquiries.
