Solitude of the Wind
In 1988, the Iraqi government launched the “Anfal” campaign against the mostly Kurdish civilian population of northern Iraq. This campaign led to summary mass executions, abductions, arbitrary imprisonment, forced displacement and the wholesale destruction of some 2,000 villages. Conducting an inquiry, several humanitarian organizations concluded that some 184,000 Kurds had disappeared and accused the Iraqi regime of genocide. The film, inspired by these events, deals with Hanna, who is sent into Iraq by the UN to try to find the traces of the missing Kurds using the torn, almost illegible identity cards she finds. During her search for these men and women, she comes to learn more about herself.
