Shipbreakers
Welcome to Alang, India, site of the world’s largest marine scrap yard, a polluted beach where ocean-going ships come to die. It is where workers dismember the hulks of 300 vessels every year, while being paid as little as 8 cents an hour. It may be the world’s most dangerous job. Flying tons of metal drop from precarious heights, and flammable gases often explode. Doctors estimate that of the workers who survives these perils, one in four will die from cancers. Shipbreakers follows some of the workers who have come from villages throughout India, risking death, injury and poison. It is an international story of greed, survival, Third World labour, geopolitics and an unfolding environmental disaster.
