Sentenced to Marriage

Israel 2002: only religious marriages and divorces are allowed. There are no civil marriages and all marital contracts, and therefore, also divorces, take place under the auspices of the Jewish Rabbinical court. According to Jewish law, as long as a husband doesn't grant his wife a divorce she is forbidden any contact with men and cannot move on with her life. Thousands of Jewish women have been living in this state of limbo for years both in Israel as in other communities around the world. We gained unique access to film inside the Rabbinical court for the first time, and to follow two women in their fight for freedom. They are assisted by a team of courageous religious attorneys who are familiar with the system from inside and are committed to fighting these injustices.
