Romance
The aristocratic old woman Désirée is being dropped in a resthouse room to live out her life. She shares the room with Agnes and Louise, who are bedridden, just like her. Agnes lies next to the window and everyday she tells the story of a young couple’s romance she sees down in the park. This way she eases the fate of old crock Louise, who speculates on weal and woe of these young people. At first Désirée thinks of this as being stagy, as being meddlesome. She refuses to talk to her companions in misfortune. In their turn, Agnes and Louise wonder if Désirée can’t speak or simply refuses to. The emotions as a result of all the continuous chats finally sink into Désirée’s mind. When Agnes suddenly dies, Désirée, panic-strucken, gives away she isn’t mute.
