Zhang's Diner

Zhang’s Diner tells the story of Zhang Jing Tao and his wife, an unemployed Chinese couple who have moved to Beijing in search of a better life. They have invested their savings in a shabby restaurant, which they run without residence permits. They have left their daughter in their home province. The Zhang want to quickly earn enough to start a decent life and bring the family together again. But he business is not running well, the authorities and the police are constantly pursuing illegal residents and deporting them back to their home provinces. All kinds of tax collectors use the opportunity to blackmail unauthorized entrepreneurs. In spite of daily difficulties Zhang is determined to succeed and go back to his home province as a rich man. Otherwise he would lose face.
