Paris, 1824
In France, the early 19th century was a time in which people were preoccupied by social policy, the fight against injustice, and the emergence of an industrial working class, and these concerns were reflected in the arts as well as in political and social policies and urban planning. It was around this time that Niepce took the first landscape photograph from his window, in 1827 and was soon followed by Daguerre. This documentary recreates the atmosphère of early nineteenth-century France, drawing on political records, the very first photographs, the wealth of cinema dramatisations of this eventful period, stage plays and paintings, which reveal changes in clothing, behaviour and lifestyles as well as in aesthetic values.
