Palabras verdaderasWords of Truth
Mario Benedetti was born in 1920, in Paso de los Toros, a little town in the north of Uruguay. And in all modesty — a modesty which is such a part of him — he has become the most-read poet of the Spanish language. A man deeply committed to his time and his people, capable of capturing the soul of the citizen of Montevideo. Words of Truth transforms the testimonies of writers such as Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Eduardo Galeano, José Saramago and Juan Gelman into key pieces of the puzzle which make up the portrait of a man from Montevideo, a man as illustrious as he is modest, known and loved by his legions of readers and quoted even by his enemies. Mario Benedetti talks of his childhood, his political commitments, of exile and the changes which this brought to him and his city, Montevideo.
