Ouwe JongensBoys Will Be
The benches are everywhere, in every town, every city, everywhere in the world. The old men are the same everywhere ; retired men, in the final stage of their lives. They don't need to do things any more, no more urges either. Boys will be is a film about being timeless. Older people have contributed their share to society and are free to just be and do nothing. They have proven themthelves. Still they comment the world that surrounds them, passes them. The film shows the old men on the benches in and around the Amsterdam town hall. In the hall of this modern building made of glass, stell and brick the same men have sat for years. Everyday there is about six or seven of them there. The arrangement differs. The entire group consists of some thirteen men between sixty and ninety years old. If the weather is nice the men sit outside. Right in front there is a jetty for canal tour boats. On both sides of this jetty are benches. These men form their island of "old age", an island of "being". Yet the world surrounding them is a mere distraction from their own universe. Here the laws of years of comradeship rule. The film is an abstract poetic tale with a dash of Amsterdam humor.
