Every morning, for the past 15 years, Armando Punzo has walked through the gates of the high-security prison in Volterra, Tuscany, and gone to work. Punzo is a Neapolitan and a stage director by profession. Fortezza is a prison for criminals sentenced to life imprisonment or long terms. Of its 200 inhabitants, about 50 are part of the "Compagnia della Fortezza" a theater group composed exclusively of convicts. This documentary follows the weeks of rehearsals leading to the first night of their latest show, which was held in the yard of the Fortezza di Volterra. It is a small miracle and an rare example of how prison can provide a extraordinary opportunity for social reinsertion and an educational and cultural stimulus.
