Métro Lumière
Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s film Café Lumière, shot in Tokyo in tribute to the late Yasujirô Ozu for the centennial of his birth, is an encounter between two great filmmakers. Métro Lumière is a documentary that explores this declaration of love to Japanese culture and landscapes. It illuminates two modern cities, Taiwan and Tokyo. The film is based on a series of interviews with Hou Hsiao-Hsien, who gives us an unconventional portrait of Ozu. Speaking with humor and openness, the filmmaker reveals himself as both sensitive and demanding towards his own work and that of Ozu’s.
