Ernst, a young trainee doctor is the altruistic son of a famous ophthalmologist. He is married to Vally, his parent’s former house servant, who led him to believe she was pregnant. Returning from military service, he becomes a doctor and assists his father in his practice. Learning his father has duped him by claiming all the credit for a medical discovery, he decides to move into another medical field to work in a psychiatric clinic. One day, his one-time sweetheart, Eveline, a Polish countess, reappears unexpectedly in his life. Since the end of the war, Eveline’s husband and son have been reported missing. Ernest considers divorcing Vally but Eveline dies in childbirth.
