Manhole de Otana ni Natta: Saihou Gennkann no MongolGrowing up in a Manhole
In Mongolia, the collapse of socialism was followed by rapid growth in the disparity between the rich and the poor. At the same time, crop damage caused by intense cold drove starving poor people from rural aeras to the capital, Ulanbataar, in huge numbers. Among the new arrivals in the capital were children who had been sent to fend for themselves. Without housing, these children were forced to survive by climbing down manholes and living under the streets, where water pipes provide heat. Six years after, the filmmaker visited the city again to see how the youngsters were faring. Each had a striking story to tell. The documentary movingly shows how fate has treated some of Ulanbataar’s manhole children as they have grown into young adults.
