Malgré la nuitDespite the Night
When you get on Highway A6, a Charnay les Mâcon in the Saône and Loire, you will see a man standing on the bridge spanning the artery. This man, dressed in a kind of monk’s frock, waves to the cars and trucks passing beneath, mechanically waving his hand which holds a little whitewood dove. He remains there for hours, contemplating this continuing stream of automobiles. This man is “Brother Antoine,” a one-time Oblate of the abbey of Citeaux. Today he lives in a small house on the outskirts of Mâcon. When he isn’t on the bridge, he devotes most of his time to fashioning little wooden crosses. He saws, sands, varnishes. When his hands are at work, his mind is set free, and memories come to mind.
