Maher Arar

He was a Muslim and had been associated with a man linked to Al-Qaida. This fact was enough, it seems, for American authorities to arrest Maher Arar on suspicion of terrorist activities. For this Canadian citizen, a telecommunications consultant and father of two children, it was the beginning of a long nightmare that lasted over a year, without any charges officially being made against him. There will be a public inquiry in Canada to establish what role the secret services played with the Americans and Syrians that led to the arrest and torture of this man. If he is innocent, as he claims, how could he have suffered such a fate?
