The film tells the story of Boris Pasternak, who was persecuted by the Soviet regime, managed to smuggle the manuscript of his legendary novel to the West in 1956. It is the story of the publication of Doctor Zhivago through the recollections of friends, family and other contemporaries, including Yevgeny Pasternak, Pasternak's son, the Italian journalist Sergio d’Angelo who explains how he took the manuscript from Pasternak’s hands and brought it to the West. And Irina Emelianova, daughter of Pasternak’s muse Olga Ivinskaya. The film draws on never-before-seen private footage of Boris Pasternak, as well as once-secret files from Soviet archives. The writer died shortly after being awarded the Nobel prize for Literature, which he was forced to decline.
