Letters from Karelia
Being privy to a condemned man’s final thoughts is a rare thing indeed. They are even more poignant when that condemned man is your father. Alfred Pitkanen’s life has been forever changed by the discovery of two letters that were written sixty years ago, on the eve of his father’s death. Letters from Karelia unravels the story of Alfred’s father, Aate Pitkanen. Aate was a bright, young, idealistic, Finnish-Canadian from Ontario. Like thousands he moved to Soviet Karelia in the 1930s to live the Communist dream until Stalin’s purges and World War II changed everything. This film is a journey through the extraordinary story of one man’s short life and a whole people’s shattered dreams.
