Les Autres 500 du Brésil
April 2000: as the country prepared to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Europeans in Brazil, 180 Indian tribes gathered on the site of the country’s discovery for the first time to protest the official ceremonies. As part of the “The Other 500 Years” indigenous march, the Indians condemned the extermination of their people and demanded that for the next 500 years their culture and traditions be respected. Examining Discovery Bay, the filmmakers also followed these 3,000 angry Indians and the thousands of tourists who came for the festivities. Tensions between Indians and the government grew until D-Day, when violence broke out again. 4 years later, the film seeks to record what has changed for the Indians since the election of Lula in 2002.
