Les Anges, 1943
Robert Bresson’s first feature film, Les Anges du péché was released in Paris in June 1943 and was an immediate critical and commercial success. But the film remained unseen for years and its negative partially destroyed. Luckily, it is now undergoing restoration at the France’s State Film Archives at Bois d’Arcy. This documentary deals both with the restoration of Anges and its production in 1943. It interweaves newsreel images of that year, war footage, reportages on daily life of the period, photos and newspaper articles, with the voice-off reminiscences of the film’s two lead actresses, Jany Holt and Renée Faure. At the same time, we are taken to the highly cinematic Bois d’Arcy Archives to follow the various phases in the restoration of this film.
