Le Vin sous l'OccupationWine at War
From 1940 to 1944, a “phoney war” about which little has been said was waged: the wine war. Occupation authorities coveted French wines in order to satisfy the needs of its troops and German consumers. Nazi dignitaries sought to enjoy the finest nectars. The more or less reluctant French winegrowers resigned themselves to selling their wines to an occupier who turned out to be quite a good customer. There was hardly any plundering from German troops and hardly any resistence from the French. Most of all, business was well organized. Until the day when the wine went sour, and trade led to the confiscation of Jewish-owned vineyards. The new heads of the wine trade in France were nicknamed the “Weinführer,” formerly wine professionals in civilian life.
