Le Père GoriotOld Goriot
“Old” Goriot used to be called “Mister” Goriot. He has lost all the money he made out of the Revolutionary wars because of his daughters. For his passion for them is blind and obsessive. Now, Old Goriot lives very modestly in a boarding house run by Mrs Vauquer with other lodgers. Among these, is young Eugene de Rastignac, who has just arrived in Paris from the country. There is also Vautrin, a talkative, powerful man who is said to have escaped from prison and be today the secret banker of other convicts. In the course of one extraordinary day, Vautrin is arrested as an escaped convict and Rastignac manages to seduce Goriot’s daughter Delphine and makes her his mistress. As for Old Goriot, when he hears that his daughters are once again weighed down by money problems, he lies down on his bed never to rise again. His funeral has to be paid for by Rastignac, and Rastignac will have learned from what he has seen of the calculation and indifference shown by human beings. He will be able to look down on Paris and say: I’m ready for you now!.
