Lancastria
June 17, 1940: just a few miles from Saint-Nazaire, an English transatlantic liner, the RMS Lancastria, is turned into a troop ship — aboard are soldiers and civilian refugees. The German invasion has driven several million people into flight. That day, to gain time, officials forego registering passengers. According to some sources, there were 9,000 people aboard when the liner was bombed by German aircraft and sank in 20 minutes. 2,500 people survived the disaster and were saved by nearby vessels. More than 60 years on, this tragedy is still cloaked in an amazing silence. Fortunately, survivors still remain to tell the story.
