“My name is Dumisani Phakathi. I was my mother’s first child, but my father’s ninth. He had been married twice before. My father disappeared for years. I had news of him by radio and the newspapers because he had become important. His name was Nkalakatha, which is a slang term for baron or excellency, someone who has character and influence. I always knew my father was a great man. After he left us, I heard about his extraordinary life, about the soccer clubs, the famous music groups he managed, and the many people he had helped. His life was stunning, fabulous, but beyond our reach. I only saw my father seven times in 16 years, but that was nothing unusual in South Africa under Apartheid. A nation of relocated workers and absent fathers. In 1996, at my father’s funeral, I learned that he left 52 children. So I have 51 brothers and sisters! I was fascinated by this legacy and decided to go meet my brothers and sisters... and make a film about it.” From Soweto to Ladysmith and Durban, Duminasi Phakati conducts us on his road movie to meet the many members of his family, parents and children, who express themselves with great spontaneity. Through these personal lives, he gives us an intimate portrait of a new South Africa in search of itself.
