The Ninth

As if responding to some mysterious calling to inspire the hope of brotherhood in the hearts of men, Beethoven made it his duty to set to music Schiller’s Ode to Joy: “All men shall become brothers”. Since 1824, when it was performed, his Ninth Symphony has become the musical work with the most remarkable destiny, being endlessly appropriated in the most paradoxical ways. Before being adopted as the European Union anthem as well as that of the Ian Smith’s racist Rhodesia, it was once pressed into service by the Nazis as the National-Socialist credo. The Ninth retraces the history of the successive manipulations this protean work has known, illustrated by a wealth of archival footage.
