La Mémoire volée : retour au musée de BagdadBack to the Baghdad Museum
On April 8th, 2003, nineteen days after the beginning of the war in Iraq, the arrival of British-American coalition forces in Baghdad triggered a guerrilla war and there was wholesale looting. Nothing was sacred - not even the Baghdad Museum. Over 10,000 objects, a huge chunk out of the country's ancient history, were stolen. A year on, the Baghdad Museum is rising from its ashes. Members of the former management have been sacked and the Iraqi archaeologist Donny George, the museum's head of research, has been promoted to the post of Director. Passionately devoted to his country's history, George has sworn to rebuild the museum. Little by little, the objects are being returned by all sorts of people, from some surprising quarters.
