L'Épopée de l'or noir
This first part deals with the fabulous development of a new source of energy, oil. Since the first commercially successful oil wells drilled in the United States in 1859, and particularly in the wake of World War II, petroleum has become a strategic component—both in geopolitical and economic terms—in world power, becoming more and more vital for the industrialized nations. The role of the major powers grew. A stroke of geological luck served their hegemonic ambitions: with the exception of the United States, oil production was monopolized by the industrial nations of the North while the most important oil fields were to be found in Southern nations under imperial or colonial domination. For a long time, these latter countries never received anything more than a few crumbs of the oil-producing cake.
