L'Autre Mal
20-year-old Rakieta has been forced into marriage with a sexagenarian whom his tradition-minded father chose for her. But she loves young Ousmana, a young man she sees in their village. Wandaogo becomes seriously ill and accuse Rakieta of poisoning him. Very concerned about the health of this man whom she nonetheless doesn’t love, the young woman decides to care for him. Old Soumaila tells her which medicinal plants to use for Wandaogo, who suffers from chronic malaria. But it does no good: his health continues to deteriorate. Ousmana advises her to let the old man die. But she is true to her marital duty and returns to her parents’ home to find a solution. Her father suggests a remedy which cures Wandaogo. He bluntly tells Riaketa he will kill Ousmana the first chance he gets. But fate steps in, allowing Rakieta to throw off the shackles of this arranged marriage.
