A film about the struggle for existence, about the great changes in the life of the Mansis, one tiny Siberian minority. The Mansis live in the region where Russia is pumping out 80% of the oil supply indispensable to Europe. They still live at the confluence of Siberian rivers, far from any large settlements. They still worship the Bear as their god, yet young Mansis no longer speak the language of their parents. Long ago Mansis ruled over a large domain in the Ural mountains, but became russified, and ultimately finished up as workers in the Soviet sovkhoz. In the film, young Mansi teacher Sergei Koinov travels to a far distant village to be the head master of a new national school. He dreams of a better future for his people and wants to save the Mansi children - but can this be possible?
