Jean Rouch et Germaine Dieterlen
In December 2003, Jean Rouch traveled to Mali, in Dogon country. Since the death of Germaine Dieterlen, with whom he had filmed the Sigui ceremonies and made several films on funeral rites, Rouch had keenly wanted to have the same traditional funeral rites celebrated for her, as had been the case for Marcel Griaule (head of the Dakar-Djibouti mission of 1931, who brought the Dogon people to light). Rouch, the spiritual son of Griaule, is reunited with Sangha, the son of those with whom he and Germaine had worked with during the years of shooting and research. Together they recall the special relationship forged by Griaule and pursued over the next 60 years by the woman the Dogon called “Madame l’Éternelle.”
