Equipped with his small cameras, Antoine de Maximy went to the Vanuata archipelago near New Caledonia. At Port Vila, the capital, then on Espiritu Santo, he received a warm welcome, despite his meager resources. Things started to get livelier when he left civilization for the more remote islands of the archipelago. On Vao, he refused to pay to film and was thrown off the island. He headed for Pentecost. In an isolated village an incredible ceremony took place: the men leapt off a tower, feet bound with creepers. The locals systematically ask “visitors” to pay if they want to film. Antoine was no different. But after his trip, he was sorry because it was against his guiding principles.
