Il Maestro e il DittatoreThe "Maestro" vs the Dictator
This documentary revisits the end of fascism in Italy and the epic clash between Arturo Toscanini and Benito Mussolini. It was a clash that lasted over 20 years, and culminated in the "dirty deed" committed in Bologna, when the great conductor was beaten by a Fascist action squad because he wouldn't perform Giovinezza. The regime's reaction was to keep Toscanini under strict surveillance. The "maestro", in reply, went to Tel Aviv — just to make his message crystal clear — to conduct the opening night of the Israel Philharmonic. Although the "maestro" had never liked being filmed or photographed, on that day he invited the movie cameras in to produce for posterity a film version of the extraordinary performance of Verdi's The Force of Destiny and Hymn of the Nations.
