Gnando, enfant sorcier
The Baribas of Benin still practice a deadly rite. Babies born in a certain position or whose teeth grow bizarrely are physically eliminated by the village executioner on the grounds that they could bring bad luck to the family or the tribe. These victims are called "Gnando, child sorcerer". Father Bio Sanou, himself a Bariba, has been trying to stop this traditional infanticide practice, which affects 10% of newborn babies, by receiving mothers willing to deliver in a separate maternity ward.
