Forgotten and Betrayed: the Soldiers from the Colonies
In 1941 around 70,000 soldiers from the colonial forces were held in France. The distance and the harsh climate was the coup de grace for many of them. The survivors suffered inhuman conditions during their detention. From 1943 on, the 3rd Reich needed all available soldiers for its Eastern Front. They demanded that the Vichy government order the French soldiers to keep their own soldiers prisoner. For the French army, the situation was absurd and ignominious. French citizens organized escape routes for these recognizable prisoners. The situation of the colonial prisoners perfectly illustrates the schism that divided France at that time. The principle of equality did not apply to these soldiers who had fought so courageously to liberate France.
