Écrivain d'OWriter of O
Writer of O is the story of the woman who wrote Story of O and who concealed her identity behind the pseudonym of an unknown writer, Pauline Réage. Her secret, jealously kept for forty years, was finally revealed in 1994 in a revelatory article in the New Yorker: Réage was Dominique Aury, editor at the leading French publishing house Gallimard, Jean Paulhan’s secretary at the Nouvelle Revue Française and his longtime secret lover. The film explores the mystery of the writer's dual identity, and relates her romantic involvement with Paulhan (for whom the book was primarily destined), a major French literary figure. It also evokes the cultural ambiance of Paris in the fifties, and the mood of scandal that surrounded the publication. Part-documentary, part-fiction, the film combines archival footage, interviews with figures related to the Histoire d'O affair, and fictional recreations of scenes from the novel.
