Die Mädchen aus Sidi Youssef Ben Ali
Sidi Youssef Ben Ali is one of the poorest districts of the city of Marrakech, in Morocco. Since Mohammed VI became king in 1999, women’s rights have improved. This is mainly due to a new Islamic legislation, that even though it still allows polygamy, it installed certain rights for women and forbids repudiation. However, oftentimes the women just don’t know what their rights are because they can neither read nor write, like the girls shown in this film couldn’t two years ago – before they learned Arabic, next to French the second official language in the country. Now they are well equipped to learn and understand the new laws, especially the ones concerning their own rights. Their teacher, Halima Oulami, organizes free workshops in Sidi Youssef Ben Ali.
