Destins du Nord

Northern Destinies

The NS Sevmorput is the only nuclear powered cargo vessel in the world. It sails all year-round in the ice-bound waters of the Russian Arctic Ocean, shuttling between Murmansk and Dudinka as it transports Siberian copper-nickel ore from the Norilsk mines in Siberia. This film deals with one voyage of the Sevmorput and its crew in the frozen Arctic waters of the polar winter. We also meet some of the heroes of the far north: Sergei, the longshoreman, who works outside in all weather conditions; the Dudinka-born Svetlana, who is raising her child alone and wants to keep living in her city; Nikolai, the ex-convict who even as a free man never wanted to leave the North; Irina, the Sevmorput cook, who can’t understand why the nuclear vessel frightens everyone so... A grandiose setting, a harsh climate and sturdy souls.
