Derrière le portailBeyond the Gate
François Bizot relives the terrible experience of his arrest and internment by the Khmer Rouge in 1971. Bizot had been working as an ethnologist in Cambodia since 1965. At first, it seemed as if he would surely be executed, but instead, he was released after theee months, as a result if the complex ties he developed with Douch, the camp commandant. Douch is now facing trial for crimes against huminity in an international tribunal and François Bizot has been summoned as a witness for the defence. After a thirty-year gap, he is about to re-encounter the man who was first his interrogator and then his liberator. He reflects on the way in which circumstances can waken the sleeping monster that lurk in all of us, and is often merely waiting for an opportunity to reveal itself.
