De Skjulte Døtre

The Hidden Daughters

They were born and brought up in Europe. Their daily lives are influenced by European culture and they are European citizens. But they are also daughters of immigrants from the Southern and Eastern hemispheres. Every day is a struggle to find the balance between two extremely different cultures. Some conflicts become regular culture wars in the family. The daughters can disappear for years or never return, while thousands of girls in the Western world are sent back to their parents' homeland to be "re-educated.” This film examines the fate of these girls, traveling to Pakistan in search of one such girl who suddenly disappeared. Friends and elementary school teachers are worried. She was thought to be going on vacation, but nobody has heard from her in a year. And there is good reason to be worried. In Pakistan many women are sequestrated, forced into marriage and physically and psychologically abused. Head of human right NGO, "Struggle for Change”, Khalida Salimi explains how women and children have no rights in Pakistani society. And that marriage for love is not allowed. At the English Embassy, a rescue team actively helps young English citizens back to England, if they are forced to stay with family in Pakistan against their will.
