Cow-boys sans retour
The earliest movie westerns weren’t all made in the USA. As early as 1907, French filmmakers gave the genre its credentials. They found a real “Far West” in the Camargue and shot films there about cowboys and Indians, thanks to Joe Hamman, an expert horseman, who brought back authentic costumes from America. At 21, he met Buffalo Bill and spent time in a Sioux reservation. Returning to France he invented the French-styled action movie in which he performed incredible stunt work. He shot a dozen westerns in stunning natural settings. The first world war put an end to the genre.
