Chronique de la mer Blanche

A portrait of a traditional fishing village in two seasons and two fishes: the salmon in the summer, and the Arctic cod under the ice in the winter. Totally isolated by sea and forest, the inhabitants of Lopchenga live in near-total autarky even if they have not been spared the deep crisis affecting Russia. Located on the Onega peninsula, Lopchenga is a village of 500 where the fishing kolkhoz, Zaria, is in charge of the entire village —in other words, giving work to its inhabitants, running the school and dispensary as well as seeing to the upkeep of homes, providing heat for the winter, paying salaries and pensions and many other tasks…
